The Application

The application letter

In the order of the application documents, the application letter is classified directly after the cover page. It contains information about how you became aware of the job, the reasons for applying for a specific job, why you apply to the company in question, and what you qualify for it. Compared to the CV, the application letter offers more freedom to advertise for your person and to actively point out your strengths and motivation.

The letter of application in detail - structure and content

Below you will find information and tips on the structure of the application letter, as well as on the content and details to be taken into account.

Introduction and head

1. Sender

It is important to have your name and full address here, including your telephone number and e-mail address.

2. Recipient

The job advertisement shows the address and the contact person. Write off the recipient address correctly! TIP: In Germany, if a man is the contact person in the advertisement, then one does not write Herr Stefan Huber but Herrn Stefan Huber (in the accusative).

3. Place and date

The date is right-aligned (aligned to the right), between recipient address and subject line. The place can be written with, but does not have to: Munich, 05.03.2020 or Munich, 05.03.20 or just the date 05.03.2020.

4. Subject and contact person

Omit the word "subject" instead, write italics or bolds, which is what it is about. This information can be found in the job advertisement, e.g.:

Application for the advertised position as a nurse

You can also find the right contact person in the job advertisement in the majority of cases. The address is as follows: Dear Mr .[NAME], or Dear Mrs .[NAME], then the comma, then a blank line and then onwards in lowercase.

Main part

Write in your first sentence that AlphaOmega has adverted you to the company/organization.

Why this position?

Here you should explain why you are interested in this position (e.g. focus on content, further training opportunities, opportunities on the employment market).

Why you?

In this section you will advertise for yourself and convince the company why exactly YOU fit the company and the job. Describe your interests, knowledge and preferences.

Why this company?

Here you can describe why the company suits you. Did you find anything interesting during your research in the job advertisement, company presentation or on the company homepage? Here it belongs, e.g.:

I am particularly interested in dealing with people, I find your innovative school concept extremely exciting and have chosen you as the desired employer.

In 2019, you’ve been chosen as the most successful engineering office in ............. . I want to learn from your experience and think that bringing my skills to you is just the right thing for me.

Closing the application letter

Request for invitation and closing

In this last section, you ask for an invitation to an interview, for example:

Have I drawn your interest? Then I look forward to an invitation to a personal conversation.

Finally, you say goodbye with "Sincerely Yours“" (after that no comma in German!) and sign with a blue or black pen. For an online application, it is sufficient to attach a typed or scanned signature.
